Day Eleven - Stale Bread, Tomato Sauce and a Step Back in Time

Breakfast was going to be a bacon butty, but the bread was stale and mouldy. 😞

Thinking on my feet I decided to cut off all the crusts and put the best bits out for the birds, I cut the inside of the bread into a couple of slices for a cheese and ham toasty later and cubed the rest of it to make some croutons to go with that soup that I have in the freezer.

I couldn't possibly just put the oven on for croutons so while it warmed up a bit, I sorted through the homegrown tomatoes taking out all the red or almost red ones, and then I added the slightly squishy large tomatoes from the fridge, drizzled them with a bit of olive oil and some homegrown garlic cloves and popped the tray in the oven along with a potato for my lunch.

And breakfast was weetabix and a cup of coffee.

As you can see occasionally standards slip and I forget to use a saucer, oh well the coffee tasted just as good. 😄

Lunch was tasty, small but tasty.

After an hour or so in the oven the tomatoes and garlic were whizzed together and now I have some tomato sauce for future use.

For tea I made a sort of cheese and ham toasty, using the last couple of slices of the edgeless bread with the Quorn ham and some vegan cheese.  Another small but tasty meal ... and as you can see once again no saucer!!

As my tea was so small, I thought I would have one of the remaining crumbles from the freezer for supper, but bedtime came around and I just wasn't hungry, so I saved that for another day.

I need to up my game a bit more now and get back on track, but I won't be going this far ...

Enjoy!!

  1. Oh, that video!!! The living room was almost exactly like my uncle and auntie's room that we used to visit when my brothers and I were little and my grandparents had so many of those items too - it took me right back.

Not for me though - I like my mod cons!

    1. I know!! That tiled fireplace is the same as the one I grew up with and then mid-sixties we had a gas fire installed on the hearth and suddenly no more ash and soot everywhere. A pot under the bed is most definintely a step too far for me!!

  2. I enjoyed the video, I don't think I could do it but hats off to her but why is Piers Morgan such a ( need to be polite here ) miserable old so and so. Fresh tomato sauce is so yummy ,I just fancy some now with some spaghetti.

    1. I wondered whether to show this clip as I HATE Piers Morgan and his manufactured controversies so much, but the content outweighed the pillock!!

    1. Green tomato chutney, if they would just stay green, already overnight another half dozen have turned red!!

  5. Shame about the bread going mouldy but you certainly made the best of what you did have, well done.

Have you tried doing a cheese toasty in a frying pan? I find I can get away with very little cheese and it still makes a lovely hot (and quick) lunch.

    1. My brother learned to make these when he was in the Cubs, they called them Cheese Dreams. I remember him living on them for at least a week. :-)

  6. An interesting woman. I have to say that I draw the line at emptying my chamber pot every day. But I read that she found someone, was proposed to at a 'wartime dance', and her house is up for sale. Now is your chance!

    1. Haha ... I don't think so, I couldn't go 'all out' 1940's, I do like some modern 'conveniences'!!

  7. A great clip! Must admit though, I wouldn't like to give up my mod cons, especially in winter. The house is very similar to my nan's house and mum & dad had a similar fireplace in the new house we moved into in 1951. I recognise a lot of the ornaments, the mantel clock and the mirror over the fireplace too :)

Nothing was wasted again, was it, a great use of the last bit of bread!

Ps I can't stand Piers Morgan either :o/

  9. Great saves on the food. I am pretty sure during the war nothing was wasted, bad parts were cut off and the leftovers used the same as you.

    God bless.
