Good News, Bad News and Sorting Out the Stores

The good news is my little jam ration is super tasty and although I made it way back in October 2016, as you can see on the label ... it is still in perfect condition.

The bad news ... although not in an earth shattering way... is that my bread of choice for this year does not fit in my little toaster here at the flat.  No doubt this cheap little toaster is going to last for years and years and years just to annoy me 😄

One of my lovely readers noticed my little 'Aga tin' on the photo on Wednesdays post and asked what is in it now and will I be using the contents during the Challenge.  The answer is yes I will, now that I have looked through it and sorted it out.

So the above is what was left in it.  I had already worked my way through all the sachets of sauces and little pots of jam etc and this is the remains.

I spent a relaxing ten minutes or so snipping all the little sachets open and tipping them into the appropriate pepper pot, salt cellar, sugar jar and coffee jar.  Although I only put in the two Nescafe sachets and one of the Kenco coffee ones into the coffee jar as I am not as keen on Kenco, and any more I felt would upset my ration amount.

Now everything is neatly in it's right place.  I had to get out the large salt container as my salt cellar was already quite full before I started.

So now the inside of the tin looks like this, I will be using it to hold any other sachets I acquire and my weekly 3oz sweet ration.  I thought if they were out of sight rather than in a glass jar I might not be as tempted to eat them all at the start of the week.  The last remaining chocolate bar for this week was consumed yesterday, so I did quite well really.  The tin will live on the worktop along with the larger storage jars.

  1. I’m sure they would have done the same had they had access to sachets.

    1. Oh for sure, sachets would have been a wonderful treat. I'm glad my tin didn't have any of the condiments left that it used to hold though, that would have been a bit more of a dilemma!

  2. Very annoying about the toaster - I guess everyone back then would have had a fire and a toasting fork!

    1. Now back in Wales that would have worked a treat, I have my Nana's toasting fork hung by the log burner :-)

  3. That jam looks amazing but what a stupid toaster! Could you possibly sell it on and invest in a slightly deeper one? Or does your oven have a grill you could use instead?

    1. No, it was only as Asda cheapo one to start with so it would have no re-sale value at all, and once I move to my new annexe there will be even less kitchen room than here at the flat so I will need it's dinky size anyway.

I think it would cost far too much to use the electric grill for a couple of slices of toast compared to the toaster, so as I have for the last two years I will persevere with turning my larger slices around. At the Van though, and before rationing began here, I did buy some of the little Warburtons loaves that fitted in perfectly but they are almost twice the price for half the amount of bread ... maybe as a treat every now and then with bread not being on ration :-)

  4. We had a toaster like that in the caravan and it was very annoying. I ended up giving it away and buying a proper one. Its too much hassle to keep putting the grill on for one slice of toast!

    1. Yes this is the one I brought with me from the Van, so it has been toasting daily for over two years now, I've definintely had my money's worth from it.

  5. Yes our bread sticks up out of our (cheap) toaster too, I have to turn the bread upside down halfway through the time. Annoying....as you say, the toaster will probably last for ages 😂. Still, it's a bit of a non-problem really isn't it, so I'll try not to mind too much!

    1. My brother refers to those as “first world problems”.

    2. Yep, I do the same. As I like my toast very lightly toasted though I have to watch the second insertion very carefully ;-)

And yes, definintely a 'first world problem' ... haha.

  6. Why are toaster such annoying appliances? Ours has a mind of its own and toasts the bread however it wants. It was cheap and I could afford to replace it, but it will probably hang around just to annoy me.

    1. The big four slice one we have at home in Wales is an absolute sod, it has a mind of it's own and always has had. We've fiddled with the controls so much to try and get it to toast our bread the way WE like it, but no it toasts our bread the way IT likes it and spits it out in disgust to a great height sometimes!!

  7. We were given a refund on a piece of furniture last year plus quite a bit as compensation so I used it to buy a Smeg toaster, never would normally spend so much on a toaster but am very pleased with it, takes large and thick pieces and it looks good too.Hopefully it will last a good long time, an elderly lady that I used to care for said " If you buy cheap you buy twice ", but we are not always in a position to follow that advice.

    1. I bought this for it's dinky size as it was for the Van and I didn't have much worktop space to make toast and then be able to butter it too ... I just didn't think about the size of bread until I came to use it ... duh!!

I'm considering a Smeg dupe fridge freezer for the new place if she either takes the built in fridge/freezer or it eventually breaks down. I have always loved Smeg things, just not the price tags. But I can see why you got yours when you had such a good opportunity.

  8. Sorry that your toaster does not take your bread. I know my homemade loaves do not fit in ours so I slice them in half and put 1/2 slice in each slot. Not sure if that would work for you or not.

    God bless.

    1. Aww, you don't have to be sorry ...unless of course it was you that designed it just to annoy me .. haha.

I guess that is one good way around it, I might try that. It's a long time since I've been buying the larger squarer type of bread so I hadn't thought of that. Thank you :-)
