Banger and Mash

Things are starting a bit slow here at the moment, but rest assured I am mostly on rations, even if a few extra 'things leftover from Christmas' have passed my lips as I prepare to move from the smallholding here in Wales back to my flat in Lancashire.   I would much rather eat them than waste them, which if you know me at all you will well understand.  So it all feels a bit topsy turvy temporarily but normal service should soon resume ... or maybe just start properly  😀😄

The top photo is my tea last night, Banger and Mash ... so called because I used only one of my two sausages cut into four bite sized pieces once it was cooked and then further cut up as I ate them with the mash and Bisto gravy.  I wanted to save my other sausage for something else later in the week ... it would have been way to extravagant to just eat them both at once.  Alan had his mash with a pack of Pigs in Blankets left over from the Christmas shop ... you can guess who the dogs sat closest too while we ate!!

Yesterdays post and the comments threw up some lovely memories for some of my readers and talk was of happy Sunday teatimes with bread and butter followed by jelly and cream.

Someone who still does this today is Michelle Clare, formerly of the blog Remembering the Old Ways (on my sidebar) and now of Instagram.  Every weekend and on special occasions she shares photos of the family table laden with lovely food about to be enjoyed in her lovely old cottage.

Here's a link if you want to go and drool over her gorgeous photos:

Remembering the Old Ways

This morning after taking the dogs for a long run on the beach, even little Puggy legs were excited to be running on soft sand, we called to Tesco for some cleaning products we needed and I picked up the rest of this weeks MR £2.96 spend.  That's all but 3p of my money spent and I will not be carrying over any money as each weeks meat allowance had to be spent in that week as far as I can find out.

Rest assured I am trying whenever possible to only buy British and in-season fruits and vegetables so I was delighted to find UK grown Gala apples at six for £1.60 which left me with 46p to spend  The only other UK apples that I could spy loose were Bramleys, perfect I thought but they were HUGE so I played a weighing game until I managed to find one at 43p.

I see the makings of a nice apple pie there  😋

  1. Apple pie?!? Not exactly suffering on that rationing, are you? I love it! Great creativity! Ann M

    1. Nope, it's not meant to be a year of suffering but a year of making the best out of what I have. And when you have apples, flour, sugar and fat it just screams Apple Pie 😃

  2. I think this is a fantastic idea. I look forward to following along. I have my mothers/grandmothers/great grandmother collection for recipe that got them through rationing and personally think we could reduce a lot of the foods that we eat.

  3. Using up Christmas leftovers is delaying my healthy eating! I am so against waste especially food waste. Do Vegan chocolate bars and free from fudge count as food?

  4. Your Apple picture reminds me of a month ago when I asked my husband to get me “a bag of small apples” at the store and he came home with “a small bag of apples” where the 4 apples in the bag were very large. He said - what’s the difference? Apple pie sounds delish right now.

    1. Haha, the English language is so open to mis-interpretation isn't it 😄

  5. Love those Gala apples! I think you should use up everything leftovers you have - that's what people would have done during rationing. I doubt they all started with empty pantry, even if it was some potatoes and flour.
We are still eating our Christmas foods, mainly because we like it. Tomorrow is another celebration, my eldest will be 21. So it's cake and deer stew, his favourites. Actually, I should be baking the cake now...

    1. Yes, I will be eating up what I have, but now most of the fresh stuff is gone I can incorporate other things in the weekly shop, points shop or maybe the MR £2.96 to use up tinned fruit.

I hope you managed to get the cake made 🎂😃

    1. Her photos and her food and crafts are glorious aren't they. I could look at her pictures for hours ... in fact I have been known to 🤣😄

  7. I'm trying to get back on my Keto eating program but those leftover Christmas goodies are causing me some "issues" but I am also loathe to waste any food. I'm dividing things up into single servings and putting as much into the freezer as possible so that they can come out once in a while (I usually manage to stick to Keto for about 85% of the time) - I think they call it "dirty keto". :-)

I miss "tea" - I have a group of friends who I go to tea with (or one of us will host) about 4 or 5 times a year and we were in a Zoom meeting recently where we were lamenting the loss of time together this past year. We are going to treat ourselves to a very fancy hotel tea once we can all get together again!

    1. We don't realise how happy we are on a specific way of eating until we change it do we, I hope the 'issues' calm down 🥴

  8. I tried your link and it won't work for me. I used to see her posts on Insta but they stopped popping, so I wondered if she'd stopped posting.

Apples? I used to love Granny Smiths but lately they just haven't tasted right, if you know what I mean. Pink Ladies are very nice when you can find them.

    Happy New Year!

    1. Sorry, it's working fine for me on my phone and laptop, is anyone else having a problem with it?

She still posts most days on Insta, especially at the weekend.

  9. I can just imagine who the dogs sat close to ...

Wasting food is a big no no in my books as well.

    God bless.

    1. Yes, food wastage is one of my biggest no-nos. ☹️

  10. Wasting celebration food is not to be thought of, I agree. One can't do that and it's perfectly understandable. I am very thankful for my freezer.

    1. I have to admit the tiny freezer I have above the equally miniscule fridge here at the flat, is not conducive to saving lots of leftovers for future use. I am going to have to start cooking meals in portions of one or two and not save things for future weeks. I think my sweet rations for the whole year almost are currently in stock :-)

  12. A great start, Sue, and one of my favourite meals although I usually have a portion of peas with mine. I've missed Michelle's blog posts and I don't do Instagram so am obviously missing out. What a shame.

    1. I think with next weeks MR £2.96 I'll be buying a pack of frozen peas. I have them so often usually, I am missing them.

    2. I'd definitely be lost without peas , they are my favourite 'go to' vegetable for fibre as well as a protein hit.
